Ignition Switch, DIY - Yea or Nay?

OK, so I've isolated my issue to the ignition switch, and may have a replacement part located. Is this a straightforward replacement or is there anything I need to look out for? By the looks of the manual, I'd say it's pretty easy, but my mechanic (who's judgment I trust) quoted a couple of hours to do the swap and there was some (anti-tamper?) shenanigans I'd have to deal with? Anyone have any insight?

If it's just the meter removal (speedo cable and mounting bolts), headlight removal and harness disconnect (I've already done this), and two bolts for the switch itself, I'd say maybe 1.5 hrs moving at newbie speed. The manual shows a "special tool" but it appears to be a torx bit. I'm inclined to save myself a couple hundred bucks, but don't want to be stuck with a broken bike and parts in my kitchen for the next month...

Thanks in advance!

Weight Reduction Bang/Buck

It might be helpful to start a thread and list the equivalent prices to remove weight and quantify it. Should probably quantify sprung vs. unsprung weight. Would be super-cool to come up with an excel file and be able to sort, too.

I've replaced the stock gauges (too heavy for my good scale, so 2lb 10oz on bathroom scale) and speedo drive (5.4oz unsprung), speedo cable (6.6 oz half-sprung?) with an Acewell gauge (7oz sprung) and mounting hardware (1oz unsprung). That's a total of (using half of the cable weight as being unsprung) a weight savings of 7.7oz unsprung and 2lb 13oz sprung weight for my price of $100. Brand new price would be something like $150 if it was still for sale. So that's $1.90 per ounce reduction.

I need to pull my front wheel to figure out what the FZ6 wheel/tire weighs along with the aluminum spacers. The stock steel front wheel spacer is 1.6oz.

I've got a feeling that titanium bolts are going to be on the order of $20 or more per ounce.

So it all started out so simple: I was going to stick an F2 tank on the Hawk so that I could get more than 100 miles on a tank. "Piece of cake!", I...

So it all started out so simple: I was going to stick an F2 tank on the Hawk so that I could get more than 100 miles on a tank. "Piece of cake!", I said to myself in my mind... What a can of worms I had opened!

Maybe I should get some F2 clipons also, that would be a good idea... Maybe i'll replace the footpegs too (at least that only took 5 minutes)... Oh hell, let's stick a 1st gen SV650 tail on there, couldn't be THAT hard, right?

Fortunately for me, my wife's uncle works for FedEx Freight doing body work and repairs. He figured maybe a weekend or two would have it all good to go. He lives 3 hours north of me. And I had a brand new baby at the time. All indicators of just letting a working bike stay working, right? Pfft...

So two months later (maybe three visits) we have this:

Some of you guys have probably seen me post it before. I was STOKED. it ran great, tail was on, seat was comfy (i'm about 6' and the stock seat was waaay too low for me, or felt that way at least), tank was on, i had podded and jetted it... good to go!

I rode it home, happy as a clam and then it came apart. For painting, of course. Warren had had someone ive him a can of Honda Milano Red for free, and it was just chilling in his garage. who can turn down a free paint job? While that was going on, I got a M2 Cyclone windscreen and mounts and attached that. had to extend the brackets a little bit in height so that the windscreen wouldn't clip over the front of the headlight.

Another two months later and i'd gotten parts back! Yay! Stick em on, ride away into the sunset - that's what the happy voice in my head told me. What the "other" voice in my head told me was "Hey you, that plastic fender looks mighty ugly now that there's so much space between your fairings and the fender. Why don't you just go ahead and rip that out and figure out how to mount your shit elsewhere?" Hrm.. what a GREAT idea! Not really... at least in terms of riding. So I pulled the subframe off, fender, and left it all dangly. Queue work and kid and who knows what else.... and it sat.

I finally got off my ass and figured out how I wanted my subframe to work out. The angle grinder, hacksaw, and a local welder figured out the rest.

Basically the welder added the battery box, and the plate in the back. The welded bits sticking up and the cross bar were already there for the SV fairings. I painted it so it wouldn't rust, and then nothing. Not feeling like working all day, then going home, and working on it after the kid went to sleep and we made dinner and ate (around 10pm), it just cried by itself in the garage curled up in the fetal position and rocking back and forth.

And again it sat... until last Saturday my wife says "why don't you work on your bike today? i'll watch Kai (my son) and just do whatever you need to do"... and I loved it. :) its still got some work to be done, but basically, its all there.

fixed all the wiring, made a bracket for the license plate and wired up the lights for that, had to extend the cables connecting to the battery since the battery moved up and back a little, then some other odds and ends here and there. The only two rides i've taken it on so far have been for 4 miles to go get gas (it was sunset, and i had my smoke visor on, forgot to attach the mirrors, and didn't have the registration on me because I was so excited to ride it that I took off as fast as I could!), and 2 miles to find a place to shoot a few pics of it :)

Gonna wait a while before I do anything that requires dismantling it now! And .. pics. since this is the pic forum and all.
